Model Overview

The FAW Senya R7 is a B-segment SUV produced by FAW Jilin Auto. The model was officially launched on 27 April 2016, featuring exterior styling penned by IDG, an automotive design house under Germany's Volkswagen Group, and positioned as a strategic own-brand SUV for FAW. In 2019, production and sales of the Senya R7 were temporarily halted, before it officially resumed production in 2021 as the second model revived following FAW Jilin's corporate restructuring. In April 2024, the 2024 Senya R7 was launched with a total of three variants. The 2024 line-up currently on sale offers three trim levels: Manual Fashion, Manual Comfort, and Automatic Comfort, priced at RM79,800, RM82,800, and RM89,800 respectively. Targeting lower-tier cities and suburban county markets, the new car adopts high value-for-money as its core selling point, going head-to-head against key rivals such as the Chery Tiggo 3x and Cowin Xuanjie.
Design Language
Penned by Volkswagen-backed German design outfit IDG, the Senya R7's exterior blends a commanding presence with contemporary styling. Up front, it sports a large hexagonal front grille with horizontal chrome slats, seamlessly flanking the eagle-eye headlamp clusters to visually broaden the car's front stance. The side profile features clean, sculpted dual waistlines that deliver a sleek and streamlined silhouette. The rear styling is sharply layered, featuring eagle-beak tail lamps that echo the front lighting signature, while a sporty rear spoiler paired with silver chrome skid plates adds a rugged crossover touch. The 2024 model adopts a smaller front grille along with silver bumper garnishes front and rear; the base variant omits LED daytime running lights (DRLs), while manual headlamp levelling and follow-me-home delay functions come standard across the range. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,305 mm long, 1,780 mm wide, and 1,655 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm.
Inside, the Senya R7 features a two-tone cabin theme. The dashboard adopts a symmetrical layout, where the entry-level variant is fitted with fabric seats and a hard-plastic centre console, while the Manual Comfort and Automatic Comfort variants are upgraded with synthetic leather upholstery and an 8-inch central touchscreen. The interior prioritises practicality, with select trims enhanced with soft-touch materials and contrast stitching.
Powertrain and Performance
The 2024 Senya R7 range is powered exclusively by a DAM15K 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. This powerplant delivers a maximum power of 85 kW (approx. 116 PS) and a peak torque of 150 Nm. Power is channelled through either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The drivetrain is configured with front-engine, front-wheel drive (FWD). Top speed is rated at 160 km/h. In terms of fuel economy, the NEDC combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.8 L/100 km. The recommended fuel rating is RON 92 petrol.
Earlier models (2016–2018) were offered with a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine (maximum output of 116 PS) and a 1.5-litre turbocharged unit, with the 1.6L mill mated to an Aisin 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. The 2017 Smart Connected Edition introduced the FAW E-Travel telematics system.
Chassis and Handling
Under the skin, the Senya R7 rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam semi-independent suspension setup. Steering is assisted by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. For braking, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) comes standard across the lineup. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels as standard across all variants. Drive is sent exclusively to the front wheels (FWD). The chassis tuning is biased towards everyday comfort and practicality, easily coping with daily urban driving demands.
Cabin and Equipment
On the infotainment and technology front, the Manual Comfort and Automatic Comfort variants feature an 8-inch central touchscreen supporting a reverse camera and factory smartphone screen mirroring. Earlier Smart Connected Edition models were equipped with the FAW E-Travel telematics system with 4G connectivity, supporting 11 remote vehicle control functions via smartphone, including central locking, engine start, air conditioning, windows, sunroof, and exterior lighting.
In terms of convenience and comfort, higher-end trims come well-equipped with a multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, interior ambient lighting, leather upholstery, keyless entry with push-start button, a 9-inch infotainment display, sunroof, cruise control, and anti-pinch power windows. Automatic engine idle stop-start, daytime running lights (DRLs), and aluminium alloy wheels come standard across the entire range.
Space-wise, courtesy of its 2,600 mm wheelbase, the Senya R7 offers cabin roominess that punches above its segment. Boot capacity stands at 375 litres in standard configuration, expandable up to 1,350 litres with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats folded down. The cabin also provides over 20 practical, user-friendly storage compartments throughout.
Safety and Driver Assistance
In terms of safety, the Senya R7 is constructed with a high-strength cage body structure designed to meet C-NCAP five-star crash safety standards. Standard active safety equipment across the range includes Bosch 9th-generation Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Traction Control (TCS). Passive safety is covered by dual front airbags for the driver and front passenger. Parking manoeuvres are assisted by a four-sensor rear parking radar and a reverse camera. Higher trims also add an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. In terms of intelligent driving, this model is not equipped with Level 2 or higher Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Market Performance and Reception
The market journey of the Senya R7 has experienced its fair share of ups and downs. Following its initial debut in 2016, the Smart Connected Edition was introduced in 2017, followed by a facelift in 2018. After sales and production were paused in 2019, production resumed in 2021. In April 2024, the updated model went on sale. Sales volumes have remained modest in recent times, recording a cumulative 790 units in 2024, followed by 20 units in January 2025 and 37 units in February 2025.
In terms of customer reception, owners generally praise the Senya R7 for its value proposition, handsome exterior styling, and low fuel consumption. Cabin roominess and practical versatility have also earned positive feedback. On the flip side, some owners have cited quality issues, such as minor electrical niggles, engine oil seepage, interior rattles, and relatively thin paintwork. On the after-sales front, feedback indicates that routine servicing procedures are fairly standardised. Overall, as FAW Jilin's strategic entry in the B-segment SUV market, the Senya R7 establishes a distinct position in the RM70,000 to RM90,000 price bracket through its accessible pricing, spatial advantage enabled by the 2,600 mm wheelbase, and baseline safety kit including ESP; nonetheless, constrained by limited brand equity, mixed reliability feedback, and stiff market competition, there remains notable room for improvement in its commercial uptake.
